Best buys: first cars - AutoExpress

Nothing compares with the thrill of buying your first car, but before hitting the road, novice drivers have crippling costs to contend with. Young males pay around £3,000 per year for insurance, and females £1,000 less.

As a result, the most popular first cars tend to be the most insurance-friendly – so with the help of specialist provider Adrian Flux, we’ve come up with the best models around.

Dan Clark is an insurance scheme technician at the firm. “Many first-time buyers assume they should buy a cheap car in a low insurance group,” he said.

So if you can afford it, try to spend at least £2,000 on your first motor – it’s likely to require less maintenance than a £500 banger, and your insurer will assume you won’t abuse it. It’s also a good idea to opt for something mainstream, such as a Ford or Vauxhall, rather than niche models. Modifications are frowned upon, unless it’s a classic, where sympathetic upgrades will make the car safer.

Better Mileage, Better Cars Coming - CNBC.com

For all the hand wringing, complaining and eye rolling being done by auto makers who are now on board with the new fuel efficiency targets, one thing you don't hear about is the excitement of engineers, designers and suppliers. Excitement? Yes, excitement.

After all, the men and women designing the cars and trucks that get the auto makers up to an average of 54 mpg by 2025 know that the next decade will be filled with more innovation, breakthroughs and cutting-edge designs. If you are a car geek, this ought to excite you as well.

Put aside whether or not you think the new fuel efficiency targets are too ambitious, and focus instead on how the auto makers will get there. Yes, many of the fuel efficiency gains will come from transitioning the engines and components in our cars and trucks.

For the average person, that's not sexy. For the people designing new models, it's the kind of challenge they will not only meet, but will relish.

The Food and Drug Administration is trying to figure out, once and for all, if popular osteoporosis pills can increase the risk of throat cancer.

For now, the agency said the benefits of the medicines in reducing the risk of bone fractures in people with osteoporosis still outweigh the risks. The drugs belong to a group called bisphosphonates and include such brand names as Fosamax, Boniva and Actonel.

How high have car insurance premiums risen so far in 2011? - MyFinances.co.uk

Making a successful insurance claim starts from choosing the right policy, checking the terms and conditions, keeping receipts and not exaggerating. Follow these steps to improve your chances.

Earlier in the year we tried to asses how high car insurance premiums would rise by in 2011 and in this feature we take a look at what has actually happened so far this year and gather together the best assessment for the rest of 2011.

The beauty of car insurance, we are told, is as we notch up more years of experience and more unblemished insurance policies the cheaper our premiums will become.

The fact is car insurance premiums have been soaring in recent years. And the last year has seen the average cost of insuring a car rise to record-breaking levels.

Honesty IS the best policy: Motorists are more truthful on insurance claims … - Daily Mail

Lying about mileage is top of the list of dodges, with almost 50 per cent of women and 44 per cent of men who have lied telling their insurer they drive a lot fewer miles than they really do.

The next-biggest lie is about where the car 'sleeps' at night, with almost 28 per cent of women and 31 per cent of men telling their insurers the car is in the garage when it is really kept outdoors.

Similarly, nearly 23 per cent of women and almost 12 per cent of men say their car is in the driveway when it is actually kept in the street.

Lying to insurers is rife in London, with more than 19 per cent being untruthful compared with just three per cent in the East Midlands and only two per cent in Northern Ireland.

Methodist minister found guilty of breaking church rules - Ashland Current

Following a trial in Kaukauna, a Methodist church jury has found a gay pastor guilty of breaking Church rules by officiating at a lesbian wedding. The jury has suspended United Methodist Reverend Amy DeLong from ministerial duties for 20 days.

The unusual part of the penalty requires DeLong to use those 20 days to work with a committee of church officials on creating a new process for resolving disputes over ministerial violations of church covenant. If she doesn't help write a report on this new process, she could be suspended for a year.

United Methodists across the nation are watching the DeLong case. Pastors of churches in several states have also violated the ban on marrying gay couples. DeLong could appeal this ruling to the church's judicial council.

The United Methodis Church's prosecutor in the case, Reverend Tom Lambrecht, says church officials are pleased that the jury held DeLong accountable for violating church doctrine and creating animosity and division among church members. He calls the penalty a creative way of changing church procedure in a way that may prevent future trials like this one.
